John is currently a Ph.D. student in the Community Research and Action (CRA) program at Peabody College, Vanderbilt University in the Department of Human and Organizational Development.   He holds a Master of Science in Community Research and Action from Vanderbilt University and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

He is the former Assistant Director of the Center for Community Studies (CCS), and is a member of the CCS Urban Neighborhoods Work Group, a co-founder of the Nashville Street Life Project, and has worked on numerous community research initiatives.  Before entering the CRA program John held research positions at the Center for Evaluation Research and Methodology at the Vanderbilt Institute for Public Policy Studies (VIPPS) and the Department of Psychology and Human Development at Peabody College.  He currently works at the Center for Environmental Policy and Management in the School of Urban and Public Affairs at the University of Louisville.

John’s current research interests include urban planning and design, citizen participation in urban and neighborhood planning, urban and environmental policy, and community development.  Of particular interest is the intersection of policy, participation, and the built environment, and how community development and social/environmental justice can be facilitated through this interaction.
